Unlocking Prostate Cancer Awareness for Men

Statistics affirm an uncomfortable truth — women exhibit greater diligence in attending medical appointments than men. “Women may establish a routine with their gynecologist and obstetrician over the years, making regular doctor visits a norm. Unfortunately, this isn’t often the case for men, who frequently grapple with a reluctance or apprehension towards medical professionals,” elucidates Dr. John Graham Jr., a urologist affiliated with the Hartford HealthCare Tallwood Urology & Kidney Institute in Fairfield County.

Regrettably, this reluctance translates into more men presenting with advanced-stage prostate cancer due to inadequate screening.

Here’s a comprehensive guide on prostate cancer screenings, imperative for you or the men in your life.

Initiating PSA testing at age 50 is recommended for most individuals. As per the American Urological Association Guidelines, most men should undergo prostate cancer screening every two years starting at age 50. However, Dr. Graham emphasizes an earlier start for men at increased risk. This includes individuals with:

  • African ancestry
  • Family history of prostate cancer
  • Family history of related cancers such as breast, uterine, and pancreatic cancers
  • Genetic predisposition to cancer
“I initiate PSA discussions with men over 40. Given men’s aversion to medical appointments, biennial visits are easily forgotten. I advocate for annual check-ups to prioritize overall health,” he asserts. > Related: Recognizing Early Signs of Prostate Enlargement

Prostate cancer stands as the most prevalent cancer among men. Approximately one in every eight men will receive a prostate cancer diagnosis during their lifetime. However, the challenge lies in the subtle nature of prostate cancer symptoms, notes Dr. Graham, underscoring the criticality of regular screenings. “Prostate cancer typically manifests without noticeable symptoms. Often, when men report issues like urinary difficulties, they stem from non-cancerous causes,” he elaborates.

Encouragingly, advancements in technology are revolutionizing prostate cancer treatment. Innovations like high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) offer minimally invasive outpatient procedures that target cancer while preserving healthy tissue. “HIFU represents a significant stride in prostate cancer treatment. Patients undergo the procedure and return home on the same day,” Dr. Graham affirms.
