Turkey Welcomes Russian Oligarchs Amidst Geopolitical Tensions

In a recent statement, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu declared that Russian oligarchs are indeed welcome in Turkey. However, he emphasized the importance of adhering to international law for any business dealings within the country. Despite Turkey’s criticism of Russia’s actions in Ukraine, it stands firm against sanctions imposed by NATO allies on principle.

Cavusoglu clarified that Russian oligarchs and citizens are free to visit Turkey, with the condition that their activities comply with legal and international standards. He reiterated Turkey’s stance, stating that if any business conducted by these individuals aligns with international law, it will be considered. However, he warned that any ventures contrary to international law would face a different response.

Recent reports have highlighted the presence of two superyachts belonging to Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich in Turkish resorts. This occurrence comes amid Western governments’ efforts to sanction Abramovich and other Russian oligarchs, aiming to isolate President Vladimir Putin and his associates following the invasion of Ukraine.
