Expanding Horizons: India and Bahrain Forge Stronger Defense and Maritime Security Alliance

In a concerted effort to deepen the bonds between India and Bahrain, both nations have committed to enhancing collaboration across various fronts, notably in defense and maritime security, space exploration, commerce, infrastructure, technology, finance, healthcare, and energy sustainability.

New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar engaged with key figures in Bahrain’s governance, including Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince, Deputy Supreme Commander, and Prime Minister, as well as Shaikh Ali bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, the Deputy Prime Minister. High-level discussions were also held with Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani, Jaishankar’s counterpart, to elevate the bilateral partnership in this strategically significant region.

The agenda for bolstering India-Bahrain ties encompasses a wide spectrum, ranging from defense and maritime security to cutting-edge space technology, robust trade and investment frameworks, infrastructural development, IT innovation, FinTech advancements, healthcare initiatives, and sustainable energy solutions.

In addition to diplomatic dialogues, Jaishankar personally extended heartfelt condolences on the passing of Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, the former Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Bahrain. He underscored the late Prime Minister’s pivotal role in strengthening the bonds between India and Bahrain, as well as his dedication to the welfare of the Indian community residing in Bahrain.

Expressing gratitude, Jaishankar commended Bahrain’s leadership for its hospitality towards the 300,000-strong Indian community and its exemplary support during the COVID-19 crisis. The leadership of Bahrain reciprocated by acknowledging the Indian community’s significant contributions to Bahrain’s development and the invaluable assistance rendered by India during the pandemic, including the provision of medical supplies, equipment, and healthcare professionals.

Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing cooperation in response to the ongoing COVID-19 challenges and expressed satisfaction with the operationalization of the Air Bubble arrangement facilitating travel between the two nations.

Jaishankar engaged in comprehensive discussions with Bahrain’s Foreign Minister, encompassing bilateral issues, regional dynamics, and shared approaches to post-pandemic recovery. Additionally, he interacted virtually with leaders of the Indian community in Bahrain, underscoring the enduring friendship between the two nations. As a symbolic gesture, Jaishankar visited the historic Shreenathji (Shree Krishna) temple, a testament to the enduring India-Bahrain camaraderie, and also toured the National Museum of Bahrain.
