Online rumors falsely accuse Mother Teresa of child trafficking

Contrary to viral allegations circulating on social media, there is no credible evidence to suggest that Mother Teresa engaged in child trafficking or the sale of infants during her lifetime.


The claims, propagated in posts like those found (here) and (here), often accompany a photo featuring Mother Teresa alongside a young Dr. Anthony Fauci, insinuating her involvement in nefarious activities during the 1980s.


Mother Teresa, a revered figure in the Roman Catholic Church, established the Missionaries of Charity in 1950 (here), dedicating her life to humanitarian efforts until her passing in September 1997.


The organization faced scrutiny over child trafficking allegations more than two decades after Mother Teresa’s death, following the arrest of a Missionaries of Charity member in 2018 for the sale of a newborn (here). The Indian government subsequently launched investigations into the organization amidst trafficking concerns (here).


While the 2018 incident received widespread attention, reputable sources like Reuters found no substantiated reports implicating Mother Teresa herself in the trafficking of children or the sale of babies (bit.ly/3xuRIWY).


Criticism of Mother Teresa’s staunch stance on contraception, abortion, and divorce, as well as concerns over the conditions at the Kalighat hospice, have been documented (here), (here), and (here).

Requests for comment from representatives of the Missionaries of Charity went unanswered by Reuters.
VERDICT: False. There is no credible evidence supporting the allegations against Mother Teresa regarding child trafficking.
