Controversy Unveiled: Portland Alderman Ordered to Resign Amid Racial Slur Scandal

In a recent development in Portland, an order from a local judge has commanded the resignation of city alderman Thomas Dillard, who was embroiled in controversy after being exposed for using racial slurs. Surprisingly, this ruling isn’t directly tied to Dillard’s offensive remarks.

The decision, handed down by a Sumner County judge, comes after a complaint was lodged this month seeking Dillard’s removal from the Portland city council. However, the crux of the complaint and subsequent ruling doesn’t revolve around Dillard’s racially charged comments.

Investigations by WSMV uncovered instances where Dillard directed racial slurs at his biracial neighbors and their children on two separate occasions.

Despite the outcry, the city of Portland clarified that they couldn’t oust Dillard solely based on his racist language.

However, on September 19th, Portland city attorney John Bradley filed a complaint with a Sumner County judge arguing that Dillard’s bid for mayor violates the city charter, necessitating his resignation from the council.

During a council meeting on September 12th, Bradley reiterated his stance, reminding Dillard of his prior support for the charter provision requiring council members running for mayor to step down.

Dillard, defiant in response, refused to resign, asserting that as a write-in mayoral candidate, the charter didn’t apply to him.

While acknowledging public discontent and labeling the situation as a “loophole,” Dillard made it clear he had no intention of stepping down.

Ultimately, Dillard exited the meeting before its conclusion, coinciding with WSMV4’s airing of their investigative report on his racial slurs.

“I want to get out of here so I can go watch the news,” Dillard remarked before departing.

A hearing on the complaint is scheduled for Friday at 9 a.m. in Gallatin, where WSMV4 Investigates will provide coverage of the proceedings.
