Maui’s Tourism Tensions: Managing the Surge Amidst Calls for Change

In Maui, tensions rise amid a surge in tourists, sparking renewed calls for visitor limits and new fees as the island grapples with pre-pandemic levels of visitors.

HAIKU, Hawaii – The crack of dawn witnesses the influx of eager tourists at Twin Falls, nestled in Wailele Farm. This picturesque spot marks the beginning of the famed road to Hana, attracting visitors from far and wide. By 7 a.m., the small parking lot is already bustling with activity.

Ute Viole, acting as both ranger and unofficial historian at the privately owned farm, hurriedly sets up orange and yellow cones along the perimeter of the lot. It’s a frantic attempt to manage the parking chaos that ensues once the 43 available spaces are claimed—a daily occurrence by 8 a.m.

Her duties as a makeshift traffic controller, albeit essential, have become increasingly arduous as Maui sees a resurgence in tourist numbers reminiscent of pre-pandemic times. With the overflow lot closed due to nearby construction, Twin Falls finds itself forced to turn away countless visitors, much to the dismay of some.
