From Kitchen to Community: The Heartwarming Journey of Detroit’s Salsa Success

In a heartwarming tale of generosity and community support, a local pizzeria opened its kitchen doors to a family for an impressive six years, free of charge, until their culinary venture took flight.

Reflecting on the kindness they received, one family member remarked, “I just think very few people would have done what he did for us.”

The Detroit Salsa Company, a labor of love for the Gomez family, specializes in crafting mouthwatering tortilla chips, guacamole, and salsa.

With Ray, Jennifer, Reilly, Finn, and Rowan Gomez at the helm, this familial team pours their dedication into every aspect of the business, striving for success day in and day out.

Their journey began with Finn, Ray and Jennifer’s visionary son, who 2016 decided to transform his great grandma’s cherished recipe into a thriving enterprise. Fast forward six years, and their dream has blossomed into a fully-fledged store—a feat Finn describes as nothing short of “crazy.”

What sets their narrative apart is the pivotal role played by a single Facebook post six years prior. Jennifer’s plea to the community for a commercial kitchen space every week caught the attention of a guardian angel: Jim Danoksy, the proprietor of Bella Pizza in Allen Park.

Drawing from his three decades of experience in the food industry, Jim and his wife recognized the significance of providing support during the fledgling stages of a business.

“I figured we could help them, and they didn’t have to pay any rent, we couldn’t care less. And we made it so they could, at least build the business up, to the point where they are today,” shared Jim, embodying the essence of altruism.

For six years, the Gomez family found sanctuary in Bella Pizza’s kitchen, rent-free—a gesture of goodwill that Jim humbly shrugged off.

“I didn’t need it, and they needed as much help as they could get,” he remarked, underscoring his selflessness.

The fruits of their collaboration are evident, with Detroit Salsa Company’s products now gracing the shelves of over 20 stores across metro Detroit. Ray acknowledges that this achievement wouldn’t have been possible without Jim’s unwavering support.

“Starting a business is stressful and sometimes scary, and just knowing that you have someone who has been there, and you can talk to and get advice, it helps, it’s a great thing, it relieved some of my stress at times,” Ray expressed, highlighting the invaluable mentorship Jim provided.

Yet, amidst the shared triumphs, there remains one playful grievance that Jim fondly recalls—the early morning visits from Ray, complete with flashlight antics that would rouse even the soundest sleeper.

From humble beginnings to a profound friendship and now a flourishing business partnership, the Gomez family will forever cherish Jim’s boundless generosity.

“I just think very few people would have done what he did for us,” Ray reiterated, a sentiment echoing the profound impact of Jim’s benevolence.
