Derbyshire Police Rebukes Reckless Hikers Amid Snowstorm Chaos

In a recent incident, Derbyshire police expressed their frustration towards hikers who defied Covid regulations and found themselves stranded in snow. The police, known for their unconventional methods of enforcement, criticized the “stupid” behavior of individuals who ignored weather warnings and became stuck on Snake Pass, one of the county’s highest routes.

The rural crime team, known for their candid communication, didn’t hold back in their admonishment. They highlighted the absurdity of over 200 cars driving to Snake Pass and expecting miraculous rescues from the police. With a touch of humor, they emphasized the limitations of their capabilities, reminding the public that they’re not superheroes with magical snowmobiles.

This incident unfolded against a backdrop of wintry weather across northern England, the Midlands, and Wales. Despite warnings from the Met Office about ice and snow, some individuals attempted activities like hiking up Snowdon in Wales, flouting stay-at-home orders.

Derbyshire, like many regions, is under strict lockdown measures, mandating people to stay within their areas and refrain from non-essential travel. However, the allure of outdoor activities proved too strong for some, leading to reckless behavior and subsequent reliance on emergency services.

PC Andy Shaw recounted the challenges faced by the police in assisting numerous stranded drivers in the Peak District. While Snake Pass saw relatively improved conditions, other routes like Cat and Fiddle Hill and Long Hill posed significant difficulties, especially for drivers unfamiliar with the area.

The Glossop mountain rescue team echoed similar sentiments, noting instances of hikers getting lost in remote areas despite warnings. Their appeals to responsible hiking, particularly around sites like Bleaklow with historical significance, seemed to have little effect as incidents continued to occur.

Meanwhile, in Snowdonia, North Wales police encountered similar defiance of lockdown restrictions, with individuals attempting to hike up Snowdon despite travel bans. The enforcement of regulations, including towing away unsafe vehicles, underscored the seriousness with which authorities were approaching public safety amidst challenging weather conditions.
