Golden Gate Bridge Standstill: Second Protest Paralyzes Traffic

A second wave of protesters brought Golden Gate Bridge traffic to a grinding halt, causing widespread gridlock on both ends of the iconic span.

According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), a group of demonstrators obstructed southbound traffic midspan, forcing authorities to close off traffic in both directions.

This incident marked the second disruption to Bay Area traffic within a short span of time. The protest was first reported shortly after 8 a.m., following a separate demonstration that shut down all lanes of Interstate 880 in Oakland.

CHP reported that southbound traffic came to a standstill, stretching back through the Robin Williams Tunnel and beyond Sausalito on southbound 101.

Additionally, there were reports of attempts to block traffic on the northbound side, although some vehicles managed to navigate through.

Chopper footage captured the scene, showing protesters displaying a banner reading “STOP THE WORLD FOR GAZA” across the southbound lanes, while the northbound lanes remained deserted.

Although the protesters occupied only the southbound lanes, authorities might have closed off the northbound lanes as a precautionary measure to disperse the protest.

Video footage showed protesters being detained around 10:30 a.m., yet the closure of the bridge persisted.

By 11:45 a.m., CHP confirmed the arrest of a total of 20 individuals involved in both protests.

Bay City News Service reported plans for an additional protest at noon at UN Plaza and Market and Hyde streets in San Francisco, organized by Group Code Pink. Meanwhile, A15Action announced an action scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at the Tesla factory in Fremont.
